My
first Morgan was not registered, but very obviously of Morgan heritage.
Stocky with an archyneck, wide forehead and tippy ears, I called this
bay mare Missy. I bred her to my Uncle Laurence's King's River stallion,
Tambien. The result was a lovely
chestnut mare, but to my dismay I was informed she could not be registered
as a Morgan. It was then I decided I wanted Registered Morgan horses.
I wrote letters to ranches, attended sales and generally made a pest of
myself to Uncle Laurence. I located a mare in Northern California named
Starfleet Revere. I called her Lady after my Mom's horse. This bay mare
was by Shawalla Scott and out of a Ringling's Revere mare.
I liked this
mare so much I looked up her breeder, Millard Ulch. He was retiring from
horses and had two mares left on his ranch. The red chestnut I brought
home was Roewalla, another Shawalla Scott daughter, out of Roelm Morgan
who was a Mountcrest Sellman granddaughter. Both of these mares
carried theUlch brand: 7U on the hip.
Meanwhile,
Uncle Laurence was looking for broodmares, so we both ended up at the
Horseshoe Cattle Company, at that time located in Loomis, CA. I would
go with Uncle when he would purchase mares. Ihad my favorite, but was
just sure I could never
afford anything as lovely as that mare. When Dick (C.C. Dickinson) found
out which mare I was admiring, he offered her to me on time payments.
I was touched and of course, thrilled. I was now building my broodmare
band. Rolie Field was a dark bay mare by Coulterfield, who was a Muscle
Man son. She was out of Rag J.D. who was by Easter Vermont. She had a
colt by Roland G. Hill
in 1979 and a filly by Ramona Brave in 1981. The filly I named Terob Mona
Vermont and trained and showed her myself. She was my best friend, my
trail riding horse and my show trail horse. The colt was a pretty chestnut
with a flaxen mane and tail. I named him Terob Beau Revere.
I
raised and sold foals from these mares for a few years. I then started
looking for another special horse to show. I found a lovely filly by Circle
H Pepe out of a mare named Olanchee. Again, I had a mare with the length
of neck and hip I so admire. Debbie Dawn was named for the daughter of
the owner of the sire Debi Sweeten (Michaels). Debi is still breeding
and showing
some fine Morgan horses. My Debbie Dawn was an amazing mare, Brunk bred
it seemed there was nothing she couldn't do. She was destined to take
me to great heights showing in trail. As she matured, she was not getting
physically stronger, but actually weaker. Upon veterinary examination
it was shown that she had an inoperable heart murmur. My heart was broken
as we put down my beautiful Dawn. I still get tears in my eyes when I
recall this sad time. This loss sort of took the wind out of my sails,
and I quit breeding and showing for a long time. I raised my son and enjoyed
my other horses working cattle and trail riding.
One
day I went to the opening of a new Morgan Horse ranch in the area. Imagine
my surprise when I saw an old friend, Debbie Robison. She was part of
this new operation. Her fiancée was the resident trainer, Eitan
Beth-Halachmy and the new ranch was called Wolf Creek Ranch. While renewing
our friendship, I renewed my interest in showing. Debbie had a yearling
colt by Holiday Compadre for sale. With his length of neck and hip, he
was destined to be mine. Holiday Amigo was truly my amigo.
I
spent one summer as a show groom for Garn Walker stables, too. A major
car accident that year slowed me down for a while, but it wasn't long
before I decided I needed another Holiday Compadre offspring. Luck was
with me when I bought Suntime Love and Money. A Compadre daughter out
of Serendipity Lyric B, a full sister to Serendipity Brazos B. Lovey (aka
Bella) is a chestnut angel.
With
the purchase of Homestead Butterscotch Swirl, a three-year old buckskin
mare by a Twin Pond Disco Kid son and out of a Sunup Neptune granddaughter,
I am now adding color to the breeding program. Butterscotch is also in
foal to R-Two Little Zipper, by World's Edge Goldhawk (by Californio)
and out of Silvertip Sassie. A handsome palomino of Brunk and Government
breeding, the offspring of this cross promises to be spectacular!
